Captain Travis Petzoldt

Commanding Officer

Captain Travis Petzoldt graduated in 1995 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering, and was commissioned via the NROTC program there.

 

Upon completion of nuclear pipeline and basic submarine training, he reported to USS Santa Fe (SSN 763) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He served as the Main Propulsion Assistant and Communications Officer while making two deployments to the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf. He then attended the Naval Postgraduate School, earning a Master of Science in Engineering Acoustics.


In November 2002, he reported to USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) (BLUE) in Bangor, Washington, and completed six patrols as the Navigator/Operations Officer. During his time aboard, Pennsylvania was awarded the 2004 and 2005 Battle Efficiency ‘E’ for Submarine Squadron 17 and the 2004 Omaha Trophy, while he was awarded the Naval Submarine League’s 2006 Charles A. Lockwood Award for Submarine Professional Excellence. He then worked in the Submarine Warfare Division on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations from March 2006 to October 2007.


He successfully completed the UK Submarine Command Course (Perisher) in May 2008, then served as Executive Officer of USS Tucson (SSN 770) in Pearl Harbor until October 2010. During his time aboard, Tucson made one deployment to the Western Pacific for which it earned a Navy Unit Commendation and was also awarded the 2010 Battle Efficiency ‘E’ for Submarine Squadron Seven. He then served on exchange to the Royal Australian Navy as the Principal Staff Officer for Operations Support on the staff of Commander, Australian Submarine Force.
Captain Petzoldt commanded USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) from June 2014 to December 2016, completing one deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, and taking the ship into inactivation in July 2016. He reported to the Operations and Plans Division on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in June 2017, where he served as the Branch Head for Ocean Systems and Nuclear Matters.
